Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)
HALS stabilizers prevent reaction of aggressive photo oxidation products (radicals, peroxides) on surfaces as well as deeper levels giving an optimal protection of the final product of various wall thicknesses. The shelf life of the final article is determined by the concentration of the active ingredients. They absorb no UV radiation, on the contrary ,physical active UV absorbers HALS have a chemical reaction. However monomeric HALS do migrate whilst oligomeric HALS don’t as long as they are used for the right application. A remarkable characteristic of HALS is the excellent UV protection in thin wall applications. There are two groups of HALS:
Monomeric HALS are subject of migration processes and give a good UV-protection on the surface.
Oligomeric HALS are less effected by migration and give good extraction stability and low volatility.
